CGPSC SSE Mains 2025 – What Appearing Candidates Should Know
The State Service Mains Examination is entirely conventional (descriptive/written) and is notoriously rigorous. The examination comprises seven compulsory papers spread across four consecutive days. These papers cover Language, Essay, History, Constitution & Public Administration, Science & Environment, Economy & Geography, Sociology & Philosophy, and Welfare & Development Programmes. Each paper carries 200 marks with a duration of 3 hours. Candidates must secure minimum qualifying marks in each individual paper (33% for Unreserved, 23% for Reserved categories) to be considered for the final Personality Test (Interview), which carries an additional 150 marks.
The competition level at the Mains stage is significantly higher, as only candidates who successfully filtered through the Preliminary exam (typically 15 times the number of vacancies) are participating. The stakes are immense; success here opens doors to the most prestigious administrative careers in the state.
Candidates selected for these elite cadres are placed in excellent state pay scales under the 7th CPC. Top-tier posts like Deputy Collector and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) fall under Pay Level 12 (starting basic pay ₹56,100). Other substantial positions like Naib Tehsildar or Commercial Tax Inspector operate under Pay Level 8 (starting basic ₹35,400) or Level 9. These roles command significant administrative authority, extensive perks including government housing, transport, medical coverage, and high societal respect.
