RPSC RAS 2026 – What Appearing Candidates Should Know
The RPSC RAS selection process is grueling and spans three distinct phases: Preliminary Examination, Mains Examination, and a Personality & Viva-Voce Test (Interview).
The Preliminary Examination consists of a single paper covering General Knowledge and General Science. The paper carries 200 marks and must be completed in 3 hours. It comprises objective-type multiple-choice questions. A strict negative marking penalty of 1/3 mark is deducted for every incorrect response. This test is solely for screening purposes; passing it merely guarantees entry to the Mains.
Candidates who clear the preliminary cutoff will face the Mains Examination scheduled for May 2027. The Mains is entirely descriptive and analytical, comprising four distinct papers (General Studies I, II, III, and General Hindi & General English). Each paper carries 200 marks, totaling 800 marks. The final phase is the Personality Test, which carries 100 marks. The ultimate merit list is calculated out of 900 marks (Mains + Interview).
Successful candidates appointed to State Services (like Deputy Collector or Deputy Superintendent of Police) enter the administration at Pay Matrix Level L-14 (Grade Pay ₹5400). Appointees to Subordinate Services are generally placed between Level L-10 and L-12. During the mandatory two-year probation period, a fixed remuneration is paid. Upon confirmation, the basic pay, compounded by DA and HRA, places RAS officers among the highest-paid state government employees.
