Quick Summary
Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have released Centralised Employment Notification CEN 03/2026 for recruitment of 119 Section Controller posts across 15 railway zones. Apply online from 15 July to 14 August 2026 at your respective RRB zone portal. Selection via CBT (100 marks) and CBAT psycho aptitude test.
119 seats. A 67% drop from 368 vacancies in the previous cycle. And a selection process with two hard qualifying gates — a written CBT with negative marking, and a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) where every test battery must independently clear a minimum T-score of 42 with zero category relaxation. The RRB Section Controller CEN 03/2026 is one of the most competitive recruitment cycles in Indian Railways' operational cadre, and the 2026 cycle is the toughest yet purely by seat count. With applications opening 15 July 2026, candidates who have not started CBAT preparation already are significantly behind those who have — because unlike most Railway written exams, the psycho aptitude test component cannot be crammed; it reflects sustained cognitive pattern recognition developed over weeks of daily practice.
RRB Section Controller CEN 03/2026 – Overview
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have released the Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) No. 03/2026 for recruitment to the post of Section Controller in Indian Railways. A total of 119 vacancies have been approved by the Ministry of Railways, distributed across 15 railway zones, with East Central Railway holding the highest share of 17 posts. The Section Controller is a Safety Category, Operational post at Pay Level 6 under the 7th Central Pay Commission, responsible for controlling train movement across assigned railway sections and coordinating with Station Masters and Divisional Control Offices. Eligible graduate candidates aged between 20 and 33 years (as on 01/07/2026) can apply online from 15 July 2026 to 14 August 2026 at their respective RRB zone portal. Selection involves a Computer Based Test (CBT) followed by a mandatory Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) — also called the Psycho Test — along with Document Verification and a strict Medical Examination under A-2 vision standards.
The previous RRB Section Controller recruitment (CEN 04/2025) notified 368 vacancies across 21 RRB zones. CEN 03/2026 announces only 119 posts across 15 zones — a reduction of 249 vacancies and a 67.7% drop year-on-year. The combined CBT result for CEN 04/2025 was declared in May 2026, with approximately 10 lakh candidates appearing for 368 seats, giving a visible sense of the competition intensity that CEN 03/2026 will replicate for a far smaller seat pool.

RRB Section Controller 2026 – Job Profile & Role
A Section Controller in Indian Railways is a critical operational role in the Divisional Control Office. The Section Controller is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all train movements in their assigned section of the railway network — essentially acting as the nerve centre for safe and on-time train operation. Key responsibilities include monitoring train positions and movements in real time, coordinating with Station Masters and Guard/Loco Pilot crews, managing congestion and issuing authority to proceed, handling emergency situations such as signal failures or line obstructions, and maintaining the control chart and train register. The post operates in shift duty including nights, weekends, and public holidays, and requires sustained mental alertness and rapid decision-making under pressure — hence the mandatory CBAT (Psycho/Aptitude Test) as part of the selection process.

How to Apply for RRB Section Controller CEN 03/2026 – Step by Step
RRB Section Controller applications are submitted online at the respective RRB zone's official website — there is no single common portal. Candidates must identify the RRB zone corresponding to their preferred posting area and apply only on that zone's website. Once the chosen RRB zone is locked at the "Create an Account" stage, it cannot be changed under any circumstances. Applications open from 15 July 2026.
- Identify your RRB zone and visit its official website: Go to indianrailways.gov.in and navigate to "Railway Recruitment Boards" to find the official link for your preferred zone (e.g. rrbcdg.gov.in for Chandigarh, rrbpryj.gov.in for Prayagraj, rrbmuzaffarpur.gov.in for Muzaffarpur, etc.). Verify the vacancy exists in your chosen zone before proceeding — apply only to zones that have Section Controller vacancies under CEN 03/2026.
- Create an Account (One-Time Registration): Click "New Registration" or "Create an Account" on the RRB portal. Enter your name, date of birth, email ID, and mobile number. At this stage, your chosen RRB/Railway Zone is also confirmed and locked permanently. If you have already registered on this RRB portal in a previous CEN, log in with your existing credentials — you do not need to re-register.
- Verify Aadhaar (mandatory): Aadhaar-based identity verification is mandatory during the application process. Complete Aadhaar authentication during the "Create an Account" stage. If you miss it at that stage, you must use the "Verify Aadhaar" facility before final submission. Applications without Aadhaar verification will face stricter scrutiny at subsequent stages.
- Fill the online application form: Enter personal details, educational qualification (Bachelor's degree details — institution, year of passing, percentage), and age-related details. Double-check your date of birth, category, and qualification details — these cannot be modified after the application correction window closes.
- Upload photograph and signature: Upload a recent colour photograph with a white or light background and your signature in the prescribed file format and size. If an older photograph was used in a previous RRB registration, update it to a current one to avoid mismatch issues at the exam centre.
- Pay the application fee: Pay ₹500 (General/OBC/EWS male) or ₹250 (SC/ST/PH/Female) via E-Challan at participating SBI branches, or online via Debit Card, Credit Card, or Net Banking. Note the payment transaction ID. Remember: ₹400 (Gen/OBC/EWS) or the full ₹250 (SC/ST/PH/Female) is refundable after you actually appear in the Stage 1 CBT.
- Preview, submit, and download confirmation: Carefully review the complete preview of your application before clicking Submit. After submission, download and print the e-application confirmation page. This serves as your application receipt — no physical application is sent to RRBs.
Application Open: 15 July 2026 | Last Date: 14 August 2026 | Apply at your respective RRB zone website
