Quick Summary

Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) has released the Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services (PCS) Examination 2026 notification (Advt No. A-1/E-1/2026) for approximately 500 Group A and B posts including SDM, DSP, BDO, Sub-Registrar and others. Apply online from 25 June to 27 July 2026 at uppsc.up.nic.in. Prelims scheduled for 6 December 2026.

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) is the constitutional body established under Article 315 of the Constitution of India, functioning under the Government of Uttar Pradesh. It is headquartered in Prayagraj (Allahabad) and is responsible for recruiting candidates to Group A and Group B gazetted officer posts in UP state services. Unlike UPSSSC — which handles subordinate and non-gazetted Group C posts — UPPSC conducts recruitment for Class 1 and Class 2 administrative posts: Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Deputy Superintendents of Police, Block Development Officers, and equivalent state administrative positions. The official UPPSC website and recruitment portal is uppsc.up.nic.in.

500 Group A and B gazetted posts. Against approximately 6 to 8 lakh expected applicants. That ratio — roughly one in 1,200 to 1,600 — is what makes the UPPSC PCS examination the second most competitive state civil services exam in India after UPSC itself. In UPPSC PCS 2025, only 252 vacancies were notified. The 2026 cycle nearly doubles that — but it simultaneously demands more of candidates in the Mains stage: optional subjects have been permanently removed, replaced by two entirely new UP-specific General Studies papers (GS V and GS VI, worth 400 of the 1500 Mains marks) that cannot be prepared from standard UPSC material. For aspirants who have been preparing on the UPSC GS framework alone, this structural shift in the 2026 examination is the single most important fact to account for in their preparation plan.

UPPSC PCS 2026 – Overview

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) has officially released the Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services (PCS) (General/Special) Examination 2026 notification on 25 June 2026 vide Advt. No. A-1/E-1/2026, inviting online applications for approximately 500 vacancies across 36+ Group A and Group B Gazetted posts under various departments of the Uttar Pradesh Government — including the highly sought-after Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Block Development Officer (BDO), Sub-Registrar, Assistant Regional Transport Officer, Labour Enforcement Officer, Food Safety Officer, and many more. Eligible graduate candidates aged 21–40 years (as on 01/07/2026) can apply online from 25 June 2026 to 27 July 2026 at uppsc.up.nic.in, after completing the mandatory One-Time Registration (OTR). The application correction window is open until 3 August 2026. As per the official UPPSC Exam Calendar 2026 (released 30 January 2026), the Preliminary Examination is tentatively scheduled for 6 December 2026.

UPPSC PCS 2025 had notified 252 vacancies for its recruitment cycle with Prelims conducted on 12 October 2025. The 2026 cycle notifies approximately 500 posts — a near-doubling of vacancies (+98% YOY) — making this one of the largest UPPSC PCS cycles in recent years. However, the dramatically higher vacancy count will also attract proportionally more aspirants, meaning the absolute competition remains intense.

📋 Key Structural Change — New Mains Pattern: The most critical update for UPPSC PCS 2026 is the permanent removal of optional subjects from the Mains examination. Two new UP-specific compulsory papers — GS Paper V (UP History, Art, Culture, Architecture, Governance) and GS Paper VI (UP Economy, Geography, Demography, Natural Resources) — have replaced the optional subject papers, carrying 400 of the total 1500 Mains marks — about 27% of total Mains weight. Standard UPSC-pattern GS preparation alone does not cover these papers. Aspirants must build dedicated UP-specific preparation from state-specific sources.

UPPSC PCS 2026 – Selection Process (Three Stages)

Stage Detail Marks & Key Rule
Stage 1 — Preliminary Examination Two offline objective papers (OMR-based). Paper I: General Studies I — history, geography, polity, economy, science, environment, and UP current affairs. Paper II: CSAT — comprehension, reasoning, numeracy, general English and Hindi. Tentatively on 6 December 2026. Negative marking of 1/3 mark in BOTH papers. GS I (200 marks) decides Prelims merit for Mains shortlisting. CSAT (200 marks) is qualifying — minimum 33% (66 marks) mandatory. CSAT marks NOT counted in final merit. Prelims marks NOT counted in final selection merit.
Stage 2 — Main (Written) Examination Eight descriptive papers (pen-and-paper, offline). Covers General Hindi (qualifying), Essay, and six General Studies papers (GS I to GS VI including two new UP-specific papers). Total: 1500 marks. Available in Hindi and English medium. No negative marking. Answer-writing quality, analytical depth, and UP-specific knowledge are the decisive factors. 1500 marks total (merit-deciding). General Hindi (Paper I, 150 marks): qualifying — min marks as notified. Papers 2–8 count towards merit. No optional subject from 2026 (or 2023 onwards).
Stage 3 — Interview / Personality Test Conducted by a UPPSC-appointed Board at UPPSC Prayagraj. Oral assessment of general awareness, personality, leadership aptitude, and suitability for state administrative services. Based on all subjects of the Mains examination and general topics of national and state importance. 100 marks. Final merit = Mains marks + Interview marks (1500 + 100 = 1600 total). Prelims marks not included in final merit.

UPPSC PCS 2026 – Exam Pattern & Syllabus

Prelims Exam Pattern — UPPSC PCS 2026

Paper Subject Questions Marks Duration Nature
Paper I General Studies — I 150 MCQs 200 2 hours Merit-deciding for Mains shortlisting
Paper II General Studies — II (CSAT) 100 MCQs 200 2 hours Qualifying — minimum 33% (66 marks) mandatory
Total (Prelims) 250 MCQs 400 marks 4 hours Marks NOT in final merit

Negative marking of 1/3 mark (0.33) applies for each wrong answer in BOTH Prelims papers — including CSAT (Paper II), unlike UPSC where CSAT carries no negative marking. Source: UPPSC PCS 2026 Advt. No. A-1/E-1/2026.

Prelims Syllabus Highlights — GS Paper I (200 Marks, Merit-Deciding)

History of India and Indian National Movement | Indian and World Geography | Indian Polity & Governance | Economic and Social Development | General Science including Science & Technology | Environment & Ecology | Current Events (National & International) | Uttar Pradesh-specific current affairs and history. Strong emphasis on UP-specific content in Paper I, unlike UPSC Prelims.

Prelims Syllabus Highlights — CSAT Paper II (200 Marks, Qualifying)

Comprehension (English and Hindi passages) | Interpersonal skills and communication | Logical reasoning and analytical ability | Decision making and problem solving | General mental ability | Elementary Mathematics up to Class X level | General English up to Class X level | General Hindi up to Class X level.

⚠️ CSAT Trap — Critical: Unlike UPSC Civil Services Prelims (where CSAT Paper II has NO negative marking), UPPSC CSAT Paper II carries 1/3 negative marking. Candidates who practice UPSC CSAT strategy of "attempt all questions" will be penalised in UPPSC. Every wrong answer in CSAT costs 0.33 marks. Maintain minimum 33% (66 marks) to qualify, but do NOT guess randomly to reach that threshold.

Mains Exam Pattern — UPPSC PCS 2026

Paper No. Subject Marks Nature
Paper 1 General Hindi 150 Qualifying — minimum marks as notified; not counted in merit
Paper 2 Essay (3 essays — Literature/Culture/Social, Science/Economy/Environment, and National/International events) 150 Merit-deciding

Paper 8 ⭐ General Studies — VI (UP Economy, Geography, Demography, Natural Resources, UP Govt Schemes — Uttar Pradesh specific) 200 Merit-deciding — NEW paper, replaces Optional
Total Mains (all 8 papers) 1,500
Interview / Personality Test 100 Merit-deciding
Grand Total (Mains + Interview) 1,600 Final merit for selection

⭐ GS Papers V and VI are the most impactful structural change in UPPSC PCS 2026 Mains: together worth 400 of 1500 Mains marks (26.7%), focused entirely on UP-specific knowledge that has no standard textbook equivalent. Source: UPPSC PCS 2026 Advt. A-1/E-1/2026 and UPPSC exam pattern update from 2023 cycle onwards. No negative marking in Mains. No optional subjects from 2026.

How to Apply for UPPSC PCS 2026 – Step by Step

UPPSC PCS 2026 applications are submitted online at uppsc.up.nic.in. Candidates who already have an OTR number from a previous UPPSC examination can log in directly without re-registering.

  1. Complete OTR (One-Time Registration) — mandatory first step: Visit uppsc.up.nic.in and click "Click here for One Time Registration (OTR)" on the homepage. Register using Aadhaar-linked mobile number and email. Your OTR number is your single universal ID for all current and future UPPSC examination applications — never lose it. OTR must be completed at least 72 hours before the 27 July 2026 deadline — so by approximately 24 July 2026 at the latest.
  2. Log in and access the Candidate Dashboard: Log in using your OTR number and registered password. Navigate to the "Candidate Dashboard" and locate the active advertisement for UPPSC PCS 2026 (Advt. No. A-1/E-1/2026). Click "Apply for Post" next to the combined PCS 2026 advertisement.

Verify all entries — especially date of birth, category (UR/OBC/EWS/SC/ST), and qualification details. Incorrect entries cannot be changed after the correction window closes on 3 August 2026.
  4. Upload photograph and signature: Upload a recent passport-size photograph (white or light background, taken after 1 January 2026, face including ears clearly visible) and your signature in black ink, in the format and file size specified on the UPPSC portal. Blurred, outdated, or incorrectly formatted uploads are a common cause of application rejection.

The final count may increase if additional departmental requisitions are received.

The last date to apply online for UPPSC PCS 2026 is 27 July 2026 at uppsc.up.nic.in. The fee payment deadline is also 27 July 2026. The application correction/modification window remains open until 3 August 2026. Candidates must complete OTR (One-Time Registration) at least 72 hours before the application deadline — effectively by 24 July 2026 at the latest.

What is the UPPSC PCS 2026 exam date? +

The UPPSC PCS 2026 Preliminary Examination is tentatively scheduled for 6 December 2026 as per the official UPPSC Exam Calendar 2026 released on 30 January 2026. Candidates should note this is a tentative date — UPPSC may revise the schedule. Check uppsc.up.nic.in for any official update. The Mains Examination and Interview dates will be announced after the Prelims result.

What is the biggest change in UPPSC PCS 2026 Mains pattern? +

The most significant structural change — continued from the 2023 cycle — is the complete removal of optional subjects from the Mains examination. In their place, two new compulsory UP-specific papers have been introduced: GS Paper V (UP History, Art, Culture, Architecture, Governance) and GS Paper VI (UP Economy, Geography, Demography, Natural Resources, UP Government Schemes), each worth 200 marks — totalling 400 of the 1500 Mains marks. These papers cannot be prepared from standard UPSC GS material and require dedicated UP-specific study.

What is the age limit for UPPSC PCS 2026? +

The age limit for UPPSC PCS 2026 is calculated as on 01 July 2026. For Unreserved/General category, it is 21 to 40 years. Relaxation: OBC (UP) +3 years (max 43), SC/ST (UP) +5 years (max 45), PwD (General) +15 years (max 55), and Ex-Servicemen as per UP Govt rules. Reserved category age relaxation applies only to candidates who are domiciled in Uttar Pradesh.

Is there negative marking in UPPSC PCS 2026 Prelims? +

Yes. Negative marking of 1/3 mark (0.33 marks) applies for each wrong answer in both Prelims papers — GS Paper I (merit-deciding) and CSAT Paper II (qualifying). This is an important difference from UPSC Prelims, where CSAT has no negative marking. No negative marking applies in the Mains examination (descriptive papers) or Interview.

What is the salary after selection in UPPSC PCS 2026? +

Selected Group A candidates (SDM, DSP, BDO, Deputy Collector) are placed at Pay Level 10 of the 7th CPC with a starting basic pay of ₹56,100 per month. Including DA (~46% of basic), HRA, and TA, the approximate in-hand salary for a Year-1 posting is ₹78,000 to ₹92,000 per month, depending on the posting district. SDM and DSP postings also include official accommodation, a vehicle with driver, and security staff — additional monetary-equivalent benefits. Career trajectory includes potential promotion to IAS after 17–19 years of service for high-performing Group A officers.

Is OTR mandatory for UPPSC PCS 2026? What is OTR? +

Yes. One-Time Registration (OTR) is mandatory for all UPPSC applications. OTR creates a permanent candidate profile at uppsc.up.nic.in with a universal registration number that is used for every UPPSC examination application going forward. OTR must be completed at least 72 hours before the application submission deadline — i.e., by approximately 24 July 2026 for the UPPSC PCS 2026 application. Candidates who already have an OTR number from any previous UPPSC application can log in directly without re-registering.

What is the selection process for UPPSC PCS 2026? +

UPPSC PCS 2026 follows a three-stage selection process: (1) Preliminary Examination — two objective papers (GS I: 200 marks merit-deciding; CSAT: 200 marks qualifying at 33%), with 1/3 negative marking, held on 6 December 2026; (2) Main Examination — eight descriptive papers totalling 1500 marks (General Hindi qualifying, Essay 150, GS I–VI each 200 marks — with GS V and VI being UP-specific); and (3) Interview/Personality Test — 100 marks. Final merit is based on Mains + Interview = 1600 marks. Prelims marks are not included in the final merit.

Can UPSC aspirants simultaneously prepare for UPPSC PCS 2026? +

Yes — and it is strongly recommended. UPPSC PCS and UPSC Civil Services share approximately 80–85% of the syllabus in GS Papers I–IV. Key differences to account for: UPPSC CSAT has negative marking (UPSC CSAT does not); UPPSC Interview is 100 marks (UPSC is 275 marks); and critically, UPPSC Mains has two additional UP-specific papers (GS V and GS VI, 400 marks) with no UPSC equivalent. UPSC aspirants need to add 2–3 hours daily of dedicated UP content preparation (UP Gazetteer, UP textbooks, UP government scheme notifications) for GS V and GS VI. The selection ratio (competition intensity) in UPPSC is significantly better than UPSC.

What are GS Paper V and GS Paper VI in UPPSC PCS 2026 Mains? +

GS Paper V and GS Paper VI are the two new UP-specific compulsory Mains papers introduced by UPPSC (from the 2023 cycle) to replace the optional subject papers. GS Paper V covers Uttar Pradesh History, Art, Culture, Architecture, Tourism, Governance, and Public Administration. GS Paper VI covers UP Economy, Agriculture, Industry, Geography, Demography, Natural Resources, and Government Schemes specific to Uttar Pradesh. Together, they carry 400 of the 1500 Mains marks (26.7%) — making them the single most important preparation area for rank improvement. No standard commercial textbook covers these comprehensively; candidates must prepare from primary UP Government sources.

UPPSC PCS 2026 ke liye OTR kaise karein aur form kaise bharein? +

UPPSC PCS 2026 ke liye pehle uppsc.up.nic.in par jaayein aur "One Time Registration (OTR)" link par click karein. Aadhaar-linked mobile number se OTR complete karein aur apna OTR number note karein.
