Top 5 Government ITI Colleges in Bihar 2026 – Detailed Profile
Here is a closer look at Bihar's five most sought-after government ITI colleges — the ones that fill up in Round 1 of counselling every year. Know what they offer before you list your choices.
#1 – Govt ITI Digha Ghat, Patna
ITI Digha Ghat (also known as GITI Digha) is the flagship government ITI in Bihar and consistently ranks as the most competitive institute in ITICAT counselling. It is located in Patna, which gives students easy access to apprenticeship opportunities with government undertakings, BSPHCL, and manufacturing units along the Ganga industrial belt. Trades like Electrician, Fitter, and Machinist at this institute typically go to candidates ranked within the top 300–500 in the open merit list. If your rank is above 800, you should still list it — you may get a less competitive trade like Plumber or Wireman here. Course fees at government ITIs are nominal, usually ₹1,000–₹5,000 per year including tuition.
#2 – Govt ITI Muzaffarpur
Govt ITI Muzaffarpur is the top-ranked government ITI in North Bihar and is known for strong placement connections with local industries and the Muzaffarpur industrial zone. The COPA trade here is particularly sought after because Muzaffarpur city has a large number of private offices, banks, and data entry employers nearby. Candidates from Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, East Champaran, and West Champaran districts typically prefer this college to avoid relocation. Fitter trade at this ITI consistently draws candidates ranked within the top 500 in the district merit list.
#3 – Govt ITI Gaya
Govt ITI Gaya is the best government ITI in South Bihar and serves candidates from Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, and Arwal districts. The institute has an established NCVT affiliation and offers one of the widest trade selections in the region. Turner and Machinist trades here have historically seen lower demand than Electrician and Fitter, making them a smarter choice if your rank falls in the 800–2,000 range and you still want Gaya ITI. The college is located close to Gaya city centre, with easy access to the Gaya railway station for outstation students.
#4 – Govt ITI Bhagalpur
Govt ITI Bhagalpur is the leading government ITI in East Bihar and is preferred by students from Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, and Lakhisarai districts. It has a good track record of sending students into apprenticeships with textile industries and the Kahalgaon Thermal Power Station. COPA here is a strong choice — Bhagalpur city has a growing services sector with significant private sector employment. Course fee structure is the same as all Bihar government ITIs — nominal and well within reach of all students.
#5 – Govt ITI Ara (Bhojpur)
Govt ITI Ara is the best government ITI in the Bhojpur-Buxar-Saran belt and regularly places in Bihar's top 5 most demanded institutes. Its proximity to Patna (about 55 km via NH 922) makes it attractive for candidates who want a quality government ITI without competing for the most limited Patna-city seats. Mechanic Diesel here sees moderate demand — if you are interested in the automotive or agricultural machinery sector, this is one of the better options in Central Bihar.

ITICAT 2026 – How to Choose the Right Government ITI & Trade
With 121 government ITIs and over 50 trades, choice filling can feel overwhelming. Follow these steps to build a smart, rank-appropriate preference list before counselling opens in July 2026.
- Download Your Rank Card First: Go to bceceboard.bihar.gov.in and download your Open Merit Rank Card AND your District Wise Rank Card. You need both — Open Merit rank determines general quota seats, District rank determines district quota (DQ) seats. Your District rank is often better than your State rank, giving you a better chance at your home district's ITI.
- Decide Your Trade Priority: Choose 2–3 trades you are genuinely interested in, ranked by preference. Do not pick a trade only because it seems "safe" — you will spend 1–2 years in that training. Consider job market demand in your district for that trade. Electrician and Fitter have the widest scope across Bihar.
- Check Previous Year Cutoff for Your Combination: For each college + trade combination you are considering, check the 2024 and 2023 cutoff data from the BCECEB official website or reliable sources. If your rank is higher (numerically better) than the 2024 cutoff rank, you are in a realistic zone. If it is not, move that choice down your list.
- Use District Quota Strategically: Under ITICAT counselling, 50% of seats in each government ITI are filled through District Quota (DQ). If the ITI is in your home district, your district rank applies — and is usually a much smaller number than your state rank. Always check how many DQ seats are available in the trade you want at your preferred college.
- Build a Long Preference List — Minimum 20 Choices: Add your top 5–10 dream combinations first. Then add 10–15 realistic safety choices at government ITIs where your rank comfortably fits. A short choice list is a risky choice list — if your top choices are taken, you may end up unallotted in Round 1. BCECEB allows filling many choices — use them all.
- Lock Your Choices Before the Deadline: After filling your preferences, click "Lock" and do not log out until you see the confirmation screen. An unlocked choice list is treated as not submitted. Take a screenshot of the locked confirmation and save your choice slip as a PDF immediately.
- Check Round 1 Allotment and Accept / Upgrade: After Round 1 seat allotment, log in and accept your allotted seat to secure it. If you are eligible for an upgrade (better choice available in Round 2), you can opt for it — your Round 1 seat is held until the upgrade is confirmed or denied. Do not leave seat acceptance blank or you forfeit the allotment.

Best Government ITI Colleges Bihar ITICAT 2026 – Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the best government ITI college in Bihar for ITICAT 2026? +
Govt ITI Digha Ghat, Patna (ITI Code 001) is consistently regarded as the best government ITI in Bihar — it offers the most trades, has NCVT affiliation across all major trades, and has the strongest apprenticeship network in Patna. After Digha, Govt ITI Muzaffarpur (043) and Govt ITI Gaya (024) are the next most preferred. However, "best" also depends on your trade — for COPA, Muzaffarpur or Bhagalpur may be better matches than Digha.
What rank is needed for ITI Digha Ghat Patna in ITICAT 2026? +
Based on historical trends, a state rank within 1–500 (General/UR, Open Quota) is typically needed for Electrician or Fitter at ITI Digha Ghat. However, if you apply under District Quota (DQ) and your domicile is Patna district, your district rank applies — which is a smaller number and gives you a better chance. Less competitive trades like Plumber or Wireman at Digha may be accessible at ranks up to 2,000. Actual 2026 cutoffs will be released after counselling concludes.
Which trade has the best job scope after Bihar government ITI? +
Electrician has the broadest job scope in Bihar — NCVT-certified electricians can apply for apprenticeships in BSPHCL, NTPC, BPCL, BSEB, and railways. Fitter is the second best for manufacturing and ordnance jobs. COPA is the best non-engineering option if you aim for clerical or data entry government jobs and banking sector. For local self-employment, Mechanic Diesel and Mechanic Motor Vehicle have strong demand in Bihar's semi-urban and rural markets.
How many government ITI colleges are there in Bihar? +
Bihar has 121 government ITIs as of 2026, spread across all 38 districts. In addition, 354 private ITIs also participate in ITICAT counselling. The total number of seats available through ITICAT 2026 is 33,108, covering both government and private institutes. Government ITI seats are preferred over private ones due to lower fees, better infrastructure, and NCVT affiliation.
What is the fee for government ITI courses in Bihar? +
Government ITI course fees in Bihar are very low — approximately ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per year including tuition and institute fees. SC/ST candidates may receive additional fee waivers under Bihar government scholarship schemes. Private ITI fees are significantly higher and vary from ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 per year depending on the trade and institute.
ITICAT 2026 counselling kab shuru hogi? (When will ITICAT 2026 counselling start?) +
ITICAT 2026 ka result 4 June 2026 ko aa gaya hai. Counselling July 2026 ke teesre hafte mein shuru hone ki ummeed hai — based on previous year pattern. BCECEB ki official website bceceboard.bihar.gov.in par counselling schedule release hoti hai. Round 1, Round 2, aur ek Mop-Up Round hota hai. Apna Rank Card download karke rakhein aur official site regularly check karein.
What is the minimum age for ITICAT 2026 admission? +
The minimum age for most trades in ITICAT 2026 is 14 years as of the admission year. However, for Mechanic Tractor and Mechanic Motor Vehicle trades, the minimum age is 17 years. There is no upper age limit for most trades. Candidates must be Indian citizens and either be a Bihar domicile holder or have parents employed in Bihar government or central government in Bihar.
Can I change my ITI or trade after seat allotment in counselling? +
No change of college or trade is allowed after you accept a seat and complete admission. However, if you do not accept the Round 1 seat, you can participate in Round 2 with a fresh or updated preference list. After final admission is completed at the institute, no inter-institute or inter-trade transfer is permitted for the same academic year under BCECEB rules.
What documents are needed for ITICAT 2026 counselling? +
For ITICAT 2026 counselling and admission, you will need: ITICAT 2026 Rank Card (downloaded from BCECEB), Class 10 marksheet and pass certificate, birth certificate or Class 10 admit card showing date of birth, Bihar domicile / residential certificate, category certificate (if OBC/EBC/SC/ST/EWS), income certificate (if applying under EWS), disability certificate (if PwD), and two passport-size photographs. Carry original documents plus two sets of photocopies for document verification at the allotted institute.
What is District Quota (DQ) in ITICAT counselling and how does it help? +
District Quota means 50% of seats in each government ITI are reserved for candidates whose home district matches the district where the ITI is located. Your District Wise Rank Card (also released by BCECEB) shows your rank within your district. If your state rank is 3,000 but your district rank is 450, you can get into an ITI in your district at a district rank of 450 — which is much more achievable. Always check both rank cards before filling choices.
