8th Pay Commission 2026 – What Officials Have Said
Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, told the Rajya Sabha in July 2026 that the Commission works independently under its Terms of Reference and is not required to share consultation details with the government before its report is finalised. He confirmed no decision has been made on employee unions' request to widen the family unit used for minimum-wage calculations.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who announced the Commission's constitution, has previously said the government set up the 8th CPC well ahead of the 7th CPC's term ending, to allow enough time for the panel to complete its review. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also acknowledged government employees' contribution when the Commission was first approved.
8th Pay Commission 2026 – What People Are Saying on Social Media
Discussion among central government employees on platforms like X has been active through 2026, with many posts expressing optimism about a fitment factor above 2.5 and renewed hope for retrospective implementation from 1 January 2026. Railway employee federations have publicly thanked the government for setting up the Commission, while several employee unions continue to press for the 2.86x–3.83x range and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme.
Sentiment has been mixed on timeline: many users welcome the pace of regional consultations, while others express frustration that no fitment factor has been confirmed nearly nine months after constitution. Pensioner groups have been especially vocal about wanting clarity on pension revision alongside salary hikes.

8th Pay Commission 2026 – How It Compares to the 7th Pay Commission
The 7th Pay Commission was constituted in February 2014 and implemented from 1 January 2016, using a fitment factor of 2.57x that raised the minimum basic pay from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. The 6th Pay Commission before it used a fitment factor of around 1.86x. Both commissions took roughly two years from constitution to implementation, a timeline the 8th CPC is broadly expected to follow if its 18-month report deadline holds and government approval follows quickly after.
A key structural difference this time is the Commission's more consultative approach — holding in-person regional meetings across states like Odisha, West Bengal, and Delhi before drafting recommendations, rather than relying mainly on written memoranda. Employee bodies see this as a chance to push harder for a higher fitment factor and pension reforms, but officials have been clear that broader consultation does not guarantee a higher number — the final figure will still depend on the government's fiscal position and the Commission's independent assessment.
