UPSC ESE 2026 – What Qualified Candidates Should Know
Selected candidates appointed through the UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2026 are inducted into Group 'A' and Group 'B' central services. They are placed in Pay Level 10 of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) Pay Matrix. The starting basic pay is ₹56,100 per month. After factoring in Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA), and applicable deductions, the starting monthly in-hand salary for an entry-level officer typically ranges between ₹85,000 and ₹95,000, depending on the posting location.
The upcoming Stage III Personality Test (Interview) carries a substantial 200 marks. This stage does not merely test theoretical knowledge—which has already been assessed—but rigorously evaluates the candidate's leadership capacity, initiative, intellectual curiosity, mental and physical energy, and practical aptitude for an engineering administration career. Final merit rankings will merge the marks obtained in the Mains (600 marks) and the Personality Test.
Final appointment remains subject to a strict Medical Examination conducted by Central Medical Boards across designated Railway Hospitals. Given the demanding field requirements of services like the Border Roads Engineering Service (BRES) and CPWD, medical standards regarding vision, physical endurance, and color blindness are stringently enforced without exemption.
